Memories Help Create Communication |
|
So many of us struggle with visiting our loved ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other related cognitive disorders. We have trouble connecting with our loved one because they are living in their past and we may have not known them at that time in their lives.
However, they are still the same person we have always loved. Their past is actually their present and the present is their future. It’s not like a memory to them now but their actual reality. When we try to redirect a loved one to our reality, it is frustrating for them because they do not understand. It is easier for us to adapt to their reality. The alternative is to argue with them, which does not make for a good visit.
If we spend time in their reality, you will be amazed by the stories you will hear.Knowing who your loved one was before the dementia helps in communicating with them. Use a shoe box and fill it with different items from their past. What is a memory? It’s any object that can create a conversation with your loved one. Whether it’s a photograph, a silver dollar, nail polish or a medal, listen to the stories each item will bring to your loved one’s memory and you will have a visit no like no other.
